How Does Aspartame Affect The Rate Of Respiration In Yeast

Decent Essays
The test tube with glucose and yeast had the highest rate of respiration therefore proving my hypothesis to be incorrect. The fact that aspartame had the slowest rate of reaction could prove that it is not healthy for us to intake it as it is a non-saccharide sugar essentially meaning it is a fake sugar and more than likely something that is harder and takes longer for our bodies to process. Even though this is so, the rate of respiration of yeast with the aspartame was not significantly lower as the rate was only lower by 0.1 cm/min.
Although fructose is a monosaccharide like glucose its rate which was 0.16cm/min was slower by 0.02 cm/min possibly because fructose is a non-reducing sugar and glucose is a reducing sugar therefore this

In glucose-galactose malabsorption the receptors for glucose absorption are inhibited, however GLUT5, which is required for the absorption of fructose, is not inhibited. The blood glucose levels rise when the patient consumes fructose, because it can be absorbed into the cell and taken out into the blood stream unlike glucose. Lactose is a disaccharide composed of glucose and galactose; this would not cause an increase of blood glucose because neither of these monosaccharaides can be properly absorbed. However sucrose is composed of glucose and fructose, the glucose will not be able to be absorbed. Fortunately fructose will be able to leading to an increase in blood glucose levels.…

In this part of the lab, we pour 20 mL of Hydrogen Peroxide and 1 mL of yeast catalase in the reaction chamber and then submerge it in the water bath. After it was done, it can be concluded that the gas levels increased because when we first started timing it, the gas levels were at 76, but as time went by, the gas levels started to increase and in the end of the last interval, the gas level increased all the way up to 100. This result occurred because there were many active sites that were empty for the substrate to bind to and since they binded to the active sites, it started increasing a lot at the beginning. However, when the active sites started getting more occupied, the substrate could not bind to as much active sites, so the gas levels started to increase alittle less as time went on and in the end, there was no active sites that were…

Introduction The purpose of this lab is to test different solutions for macromolecules as well as to identify an unknown solution. This experiment used three tests to identify which macromolecules (carbohydrates and proteins) were present in different sample solutions. The tests were the iodine test, Benedict’s test, and the biuret test.…

Hypothesis: Throughout my observations and my education of the process of Osmosis, the movement of the solutions moving up from the “mysterious” solution inside the semi permeable membrane which is known as the dialysis bag. Osmosis happens because of the molecules crossing, for more of an understanding according to Anita H, she says “…high water concentration to an area of low water concentration through a partially selectively permeable membrane” (Anita) The molecules cross from less concentrated solution to the higher concentration solutions (The low concentration solution is the distilled water immersing the dialysis bag and the concentration liquid is the fluid inside the bag). Throughout the experiment it is knowledgeable that invertase is the cause for breaking down the sucrose, meaning that without invertase it is unable to cross the semi-permeable membrane.…

The experiment that will be tested will determine if lactase can break down sucrose as it does on lactose. The topic will provide an explanation of why intolerants use sucrose as its substitute. In addition, the conclusion of the experiment will provide an explanation to seek if enzymes are highly specific for one certain molecule. Again, the experiment will be tested to answer the problem if lactase can break down sucrose as it does on lactose. However, if lactase is an enzyme that has a specific substrate, then it can not break down the disaccharide of sucrose.…

Due to its growth and potential, the industry is expected to become a $23 billion industry by 2025. As long as medical conditions such as diabetes, a medical condition that forces people to significantly cut down on sugar intake, are a problem in the United States, people will need sugar substitutes. Additionally, the price of sugar has been increasing year by year, so if food and drink manufacturers want to cut down on costs and calories, low-calorie sweeteners such as Astraea Allulose will be their best option. Due to these reasons, the low-calorie sweetener industry will continue to grow for years to come (Toesland…

Natural sugars are in foods such as fruit, grains and vegetables. These natural sugars not only provide energy, but they protect the body against diseases. In lecture, we discussed and observed pictures of fructose, being a hexose monosaccharide. On the other hand, refined sugars are normally processed food products such as sugar cane (Cancercenter). It is typically found as the disaccharide sucrose, which is a combination of glucose and fructose.…

To accomplish this objective, we designed a fermentation experiment that utilized natural sugar and various sugar substitutes as fermentation substrates. Comparing the amounts of carbon dioxide that the yeast in each solution produced would reveal the relative amount of energy (calories) contained in each compound. I collaborated with four other students for this experiment, and together we collected data for a sugar control and four different types of sweeteners. We hypothesized that the Domino sugar would produce the most carbon dioxide because it contained the most calories. By using Domino sugar as a control, we predicted that we would be able to determine which artificial sweeteners contained the lowest number of calories, and thus would be the best low-calorie substitute for table…

Gluskin 6 Abstract: This experiment attempts to answer the question of whether an increase in a succinate concentration (a component of the Krebs cycle) will lead to an increased rate of cellular respiration within a cell. We measured the amount of electrons given off by the succinate to fumerate redox reaction by using DPIP. DPIP is an electron acceptor that takes the place of FAD by accepting the electrons and turning from its oxidized blue state to its reduced clear state. We had three tubes with varying concentrations of succinate and measured the transmittance of each over a half hour period to determine whether more succinate led to more DPIP being reduced.…

Question 2: Blood carries glucose to different parts of the body; the brain is dependent on glucose to function properly. If sugar level is too high in the blood it can cause problems like diabetes. The pancreas secretes a hormone call insulin which moves glucose through the blood into the cells to be used for energy. The pancreas also secretes glucagon when the blood sugar levels are too low.…

Carbohydrates can be classified into three groups: monosaccharide, disaccharides and polysaccharides. Monosaccharide is simple sugars, and its main representatives are glucose (manufactured by plants during photosynthesis), fructose (found in honey) and lactose (found in milk). The union of two monosaccharaides forms disaccharides, and his best-known representatives are sucrose and lactose. Sucrose consists of a glucose molecule and a fructose molecule. Sucrose is the sugar we consume at home, which we use in our coffee, juices, pastries etc.…
