Through this, MIller achieved a new understanding for the horrible actions taken in the Crucible. Proctor committed adultery with abigail before the Trials had begun. Abigail wanted John for herself and would do anything to get it. This is evident when Betty, a child pretending to be in a comma, says, “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!” as it underlines her jealousy would drive her to do anything to get what she wants. This can be connected back to the red scarce, due to the extend people would go through to rid themselves of an enemy through McCarthyism.
