The former President of India, Abdul Kalam, once said, "The bird is powered by its own life and by its motivation." Unfortunately, in Number the Stars, the author does not give the reader a clear reason why Annemarie and her family feel obligated to help the Rosens, making the story unrealistic.
Annemarie does undergo change, but it is a minor change. At the beginning of the book, she is frightened when some German soldiers stop her, even though she didn't do anything illegal (yet). But, in the end, even though she is still frightened, she has enough courage to lie in front of their faces. Annemarie is very respectful to her parents, and she will do anything they tell her to do.
