Rain becomes acidic in nature when cars and industries release certain pollutants into the air that then contaminate the precipitation. Acid rain has two categories: wet deposition, when it is in the form of rain, sleet, fog, snow or mist and dry deposition, when it is in the form of dust or smoke. Both variations have negative effects on the environment, as well as the economy. The economic costs of acid is rain is difficult to estimate, as it does copious damage to many different things. However, one of the most recent study done was in 1985 and it came to the conclusion that annually, damages to forests, lakes, agriculture and materials by acid rain cost an estimated five billion dollars for the United States and Canada, combined. The change in economy and environment since this time implies that the price has only gone up. Another study concluded that over the next five years, restoring monuments is thought to cost 2.2 trillion dollars. Damages to nature and monuments aside, acid rain also corrodes roads, highways, and bridges as well as erodes metals on vehicles, trains and buses. It is due to the infinite damage that acid rain causes that a price can not be put on it, but taking everything into consideration, one can come to the conclusion that it costs the United States trillions every
