The Trojan war (or the Iliad) has Achilles, and Hector. In the Trojan war, from the start of the Achilles’ second entrance into battle, Athena, along with Thetis, helps Achilles achieve his revenge, giving him armor made from the blacksmith god, Hephaestus, following him into battle, getting Hector to fight Achilles instead of running away, and even returning his spear when Achilles misses Hector. So, with an obvious handicap, Achilles kills Hector and disgraces his body, being forced to give it back later. And later, Achilles is written down in Greek mythology as a hero. A man who, went into battle with invincible armor made by the GOD of blacksmiths (on top of the spell his mother, Thetis, had placed on him as a baby to make him invincible everywhere except for his heel), and with the goddess of war strategy walking around picking up his thrown spears, which he doesn’t even hit Hector with, and edging him on, telling him to kill a man forsaken by the god that cared for him, was written into the history books as a hero. And what about Hector? he had the power of gods with him as well. Two, to be precise. Hector had Apollo, his caretaker, and Ares, the god of bloodshed and war. Ashure Ashe says that, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge surpass all other at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost” (1).Heroes today are not people who can defeat cyclops, or survive three headed monsters, or try to fight off giants like the protagonist of the Odyssey, Odysseus.
