World War I and the Great Depression were desperate times for many people. These events affected humankind worldwide and left them with very little to survive on. However, this did not stop authors such as William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, and Susan Glaspell from expressing their own harrowing experiences and views that changed because of these challenging times In 1929 New York Stock Exchange’s stock-market prices collapsed and sent North America and other countries into extreme distress, which caused many banks to foreclosure.
“The failure of so many banks, combined with a general and nationwide loss of confidence in the economy, led to much reduced levels of spending and demand and hence the production, thus aggravating the downward

As stated before, one of the modernist characteristics is the usage of symbolism and images instead of statements. Each character symbolizes something to do with this time period. Emily is seen as the “Old South” because she does not want to let go of the past and wants old traditions. She has a resistance against the changes coming to the her town. Emily later meets a “yankee” named Homer Barron, which can be seen as the reconstruction coming from the North. Homer later became a love interest for Emily and suddenly disappeared. He was later found in a room where Emily would wrap his arms around her while she slept. This symbolizes how the “Old South” did not want to let go of the past. Faulkner used his childhood in Oxford to establish a setting and allow the current events to cause conflict within Emily’s life in the story. During the World War I and Great Depression, society lost hope in their ability to come back from such a tragedy, which is also shown in this short story. Emily loses hope in the town and how it is evolving around her. Emily can be compared to William Faulkner as well. Similar to Emily, he had a resistance to certain things and on account he has been seen “at various time quarreled with his community” (Rubin, Jackson, Moore, Simpson, & Young 338) Since Faulkner grew up in the South he …show more content…
When the stock-market prices crashed, Norman Cousins noticed the number of women that had a paying job was the same as the unemployment rate, which led to men taking the jobs of many women. (Ware The Great Depression and World War II) But they later realized that this did not work when coming to nurses and other ‘women-like” jobs. During 1936, women gained 2 million more jobs and even a increase in more working time. (Ware The Great Depression and World War II) This can be seen in Trifles as the men had the jobs, but never take the input of the women in the play, which shows that the men had more importance in this time

Redundancy is also an excellent tool used by authors to help add emphasis towards a certain aspect of a story. In A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner uses redundancy in the way that he uses repetition to add importance to a certain part of the story. Emily, repeats these words while speaking to the member of the Board of Aldermen member, making the reader realize that to her this is an argument worth winning, by repeating this statement, the reader is aware that this is an important aspect to the story and that they should keep this in mind while reading the story since, it plays a role in the progression of the plot.…

The character element is important in any piece of literature because the story would cease to make sense or even serve a purpose if it does not obtain any characteristics or element to further the plot of the story. In the short story “A Rose for Emily”, Emily’s character development only changes superficially and instead the trait that describes her character is her inability to change because of her relationship with her father. When one holds on to the past, the present is being destroyed. The past is a building block for the future, but should not be dwelt on. Paul Harris illustrates this point by stating, “the mystery is hidden in the “past,” as a scandalous event that remained hidden from view for a long time” (Harris 172). Miss Emily falls in love with homer in order to get away from her so called upper class. In the story, homer is a construction supervisor which is far from the upper class.…

The ultimate goal of a young woman in the south was to find love and marry, that is if her father did not chase possible husbands away. Emily was an eccentric figure who changed from a joyful and vibrant child to a secretive and mentally ill woman. After her father’s death, she was lonely, as a result of him ensuring that she would never marry. Emily had to face her father driving away young men in town, who he believed were not good enough for her. In William Faulkner 's, “A Rose For Emily,” he uses the killing of Homer, old southern traditions, and Emily’s ego to show that she is desperate for love and enhance the overall meaning that Emily is unable to let go of the past, only preserve it.…

Mosby says “Change is Miss Emily’s enemy, so she refuses to acknowledge it, whether that change is the death of her father, the arrival of tax bills, the decay of her house, or even the beginning of residential mail delivery”(Mosby, 2), she was totally unawared about changing.
