How Does A Frog Twitch

Luigi Galvani used an electrostatic machine that produced sparks on frog legs and began to investigate the muscular contractions produced by electricity. Galvani discovered that the frog leg would contract if a scalpel touched the frog’s nerves when the machine was on.

More comprehensive experiments by Galvani showed that a dead frog’s leg could be made to twitch by electrical stimulation. Galvani also showed that the same twitching could be produced by touching the leg with a copper hook hung from an iron nail. This led him to conclude that the electricity that caused the frog’s legs to twitch was coming from within the frog and he described it as animal electricity. Fundamentally, Galvani to a certain extent was right as animals do produce

Benjamin Franklin is a famous scientist who changed the world with this kite experiment. His experiment is called "The Philadelphia Experiment". The lab itself was the study of the relationship between the electricity in the lightning and a lightning rod itself. Franklin's theory involved the lightning bolt neutralizing the total or even a piece of the charged storm cloud. The bolt would then send energy to the high lightning rod.…

The sciatic nerve used for the experiment was removed from a bullfrog that had been double-pithed. This means that the connection between the frog’s spinal cord and brain was severed. The result being that the frog could no longer feel the sensation of pain and that its muscle reflexes no longer functions. The frog’s skin was cut and pulled all the way down its body from the abdomen and removed from the legs. Its thigh muscles were then separated in order to expose the nerve.…

Poison Dart Frog Poison dart frogs are carnivorous amphibians in the family Dendrobatidae. Some of the colors that poison dart frogs can have are blue, yellow, green, and red. Their distinct colors have a purpose of keeping predators away. Those in the Dendrobatidae family have extremely high toxicity. For example, the poison in one golden poison dart frog could kill ten people.…

The muscle strength and reflex lab uses the involvement of two subjects to demonstrate the electrical properties of muscles and their motor neurons. With the relative strength and electrical activity of the dominant forearm, the observed data showed how the dominant forearm will average a higher force due to the amount of strength that arm may or may not have, and the amount of receptors that contract in unison. Supporting our second hypothesis, the non-dominant forearm resulted in a higher fatigue rate than the dominant forearm. This demonstration shows how the dominant arm with larger diameter fibers will be more likely to have more mitochondria and myofibrils causing the longer fibers to fatigue. There may also be a case where the dominant…

WHY DO BENJAMIN FRANKLIN FLY A KITE during a thunderstorm? IN 1752 the great American stateman and scientist attached a key to the end of a kite line, and flew the kite during a thunderstorm. The key gave off sparks when lightning struck, thus proving that lightning is an electrical discharge. It was a very dangerous experiment and people have been killed trying to copy…

This use of kinetic energy became a phenomena that researchers needed to uncover. Galvani and many other scientists toyed with electricity and biology, eventually figuring out that the body is a useful conductor and that muscles operate on a form of electricity produced by the body. Using this knowledge, we are able to restart a heart, thus…

When putting a frog in a pot with boiling water in it, the frog will jump out of the pot immediately. However, when it was put in a pot of cold water and the pot was slowly heated, the frog would be boiled alive and die in the pot. However, this story is proved not true recently. According to Fast Company (2006), J. Debra Hofman did a new examination of the boiling frogs. “We placed Frog A into a pot of cold water and applied moderate heat.…

Galvanism is animating a dead corps by electrocution throughout the body. Luigi Galvani was not the first person to think of pulsing electricity through the body, but he was the person who determined that electricity was present within the body itself. The electricity animates the dead body and causes it to move through muscle movement. Luigi Galvani founded this idea in 1791. Genetic engineering is a variety of techniques that cut up and combine different genetic material to create or change a characteristic.…

The fact that electric shocks affected the heart had been known for some time. Experiments in dogs had shown that a shock to the heart could trigger ventricular fibrillation, a condition where the heart twitches instead of beats. This was known to happen to powerline workers, killing them on the job (Eisenberg 4-5). William Kouwenhoven, an electrical engineer, became the lead researcher.…

In the first chapter, the phrase "straight from the horse 's mouth" is repeated, Foster states that "any cow" could hatch out embryos, and that "Rams wrapped in theremogene beget no lambs" (4, 13, 5). When John sees his mother for the last time in the hospital, he describes the children 's staring at Linda with "the stupid curiosity of animals" and the group of identical twins seemed like "maggots" to John (202, 201). Even though civilization usually is seen to raise man above animals and make him less primitive and savage, Huxley is showing the opposite. In the argument between John and Mond, Mond says, "Nice tame animals, anyhow" (219). Animals can be controlled and in this way the people of Brave New World are like animals or pets.…

In viewing this elaboration it can be easily recognized that I simply restated the views held by Lamott rather than arguing my point that the true success first drafts hold. To better this part of my elaboration, I could have stated the position as a strong point of view I am trying to argue, as opposed to just collectively referring to the evidence as a supporting detail of Lamott’s position. Overall, my elaboration in this paper lacks the strength and new ideas which could have made this essay more successful. On the contrary, my paper on arguments of definition showed great competency and ideas through my elaborations. When arguing the need to define “cruelty-free”, I stated, “To fix this…

Although animal experimentation has provided many benefits, there are alternatives to test toxic substances that may eliminate the cruel use of animals in research. The United States, along with many other countries, have turned to the use of animals in research labs to test human products for hazardous substances. According to the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, the United States uses about 12 million animals every year making it the biggest conductor of animal experimentation in the world. Scientists and many companies believe that testing their products on animals save humans from being harmed if the product is toxic. However, no matter what the benefits of animal experimentation are, the tests conducted on the animals are cruel.…
