Wes Anderson manipulates Mise-en-scene in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) by using color, décor, costume, to show the development of relationships, and give an insight into characters and the film’s contrast of a family that appears to be perfect, but is very dysfunctional.
Costumes like Margot’s, and Chase’s give insight into the characters personality, and their current emotions towards the main events. Margot’s costume; a Blue or Red tennis dress often accompanied by a big fur coat that matches her hair color. The coat acts like a protection against others she’s uncomfortable with seeing her vulnerable side, and acts as a way to distance herself from others. The tennis dress represents her interest for her adopted brother Richie, and the color of the dress represents a person she’s thinking about. Red representing Royal, and blue Representing Richie. We see this mainly as the film progresses, with the color Red starting when Margot hears about Royals illness, and then switching to blue when she starts focusing on her interest with Richie. …show more content…
Chase has major issues with Royal that we see and are explored throughout the movie. Majority of the Film, Chase is rejecting Royal’s attempts at interacting and getting closer with him. During these times Chase is wearing his Red track-suit, (a color which represents Royal) Representing his subconscious need to have a connection some form of connection to Royal. One of the few times we see him wear another outfit he’s rarely wearing the color red, and during those times it’s when he’s able to have a conversation and subsequently grow closer to Royal. An example of this could be during the Wedding when Case is wearing his wedding
