More women want careers, and companies need women who want a career, but there is an issue that companies face; the inability to retain women the workplace. Productivity and profitability are known to excel in companies with an equal amount of men and women in the workplace including higher level positions, but despite these benefits, women are still leaking out the workforce between being recruiting and board level. Case 5.1 presents the challenge of creating an ideal work environment for women. So how do we keep women in the workforce? Creating a more flexible, challenging, and family supporting workplace will help companies keep their women talent pool. Women are seeking a flexible workplace. A company that is flexible shows they value diversity in the workplace since the company is readily able to work around employees’ lives. Not only is flexibility shalt after by employees, but it is a good management decision. With flexibility, managers can easily adjust work schedules to employee personal issue, or an influx of work. Women want to know they are trusted to do their work on their own, and when management shows they can be flexible, employees feel more at ease and creative. Employees who feel challenged at their job are happier and less likely to become bored. Companies can show that they believe in their employees by giving them new assignments that will challenge them, motivate them, and push them to work harder. Women want to be able to earn the trust of their employer and one way they feel this trust is by being challenged in the workplace. Women of course want to be rewarded for completing these challenges, and want to know they are able to move up in the company. If women believe there is a glass ceiling within the company, they will leave. What is the point of them working hard as men, if they can’t move up the latter the same
