How Do Volcanoes Affect A Civilization

Have you ever thought about how a volcanic eruption could impact a civilization? Some civilizations could be really affected, while other civilizations could have very minimal damage done to them. I am going to tell you about three different times volcanoes have affected civilizations and you will be surprised at some of the damage done.

The first volcanic eruption that I am going to tell you about happened in Kalapana, Hawaii. It was Mount Kilauea that had caused all the damage that still lies today. This explosion happened 28 years ago, on the beach town that was one of the many places affected. Before the explosion, many people said it was the most beautiful place to visit on the island but now they say it is a historical landmark. The lava’s fierce path went through 180 homes in Kalapana and cause the population the split in half leaving very few houses today. Many people on the island used the motto, “ We will wait, watch, then move,” and this showed that many people knew they would be affected.

This happened in the famous lost city of Pompeii almost 2,000 years ago, after Mount Vesuvius erupted the whole city of Pompeii was covered with lava and ash causing everybody to die. Most of the people affected looked as if they were doing normal day things when their roof crashed in on them. More than 100 plaster casts of bodies have been made and put into museums. Therefore, heavy rains, weather, and thousands of terrorist are causing buildings to fall down.
