How Do Violent Video Games Affect Criminal Behavior?

There is no question that children are impressionable. Children are directly and indirectly affected by their environment. One thing that is common with children is that children play video games. In fact, over 90 percent of children play video games in some form and that figure is even higher, at 97%, when only considering children ages 12-17 (APA).
Many modern video games are not designed for children. Some are designed and marketed solely for adults. These games often contain much more mature themes and have content that is unsuitable for children. This unsuitable content can include violence, language, sexuality, gambling, and alcohol, tobacco and drug use and many others.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board is a non-profit organization, created in 1994 by the Entertainment Software Association, that evaluates video games and then assigns them ratings so that parents can make informed choices (ESRB). Virtually all video games that are sold in the United States and Canada have been voluntarily rated by the ESRB. Most major retailers will not even consider selling a game unless it has received a rating from the ESRB. The ratings are a three-part system that includes age-based rating

This was mostly due to a lack of research that focused on the issue of criminal behavior. Although the media and public most often ask about a correlation between criminal behavior and violent video games, there is very little research that has focused on it. One one of the 31 reviewed research studies investigated for links between criminal behavior and violent video game exposure. Thus, the task force was unable to make any conclusions when it comes to a link between criminal behavior and violent video game
