How Do Romeo And Juliet Defy Their Parents

Improved Essays
Even the feuding of families and disapproval of parents can’t stop true love. This is just one major theme of Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet knew that if their parents had known about their love they would have forbid it. They decided they would not let that stop them and they got married against their parents wishes. Romeo and Juliet only knew each other for a short time, but they were willing to give up literally everything for each other. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet are both aware that their joining will not end well. They will have to either defy their parents or live without each other. When Juliet realizes that Romeo is Montague she says, “My only love sprung from my only hate!” (1.5.136). One song “Rude” by Magic! Is an example of a modern artform that relates in the way that nothing, even family can get in the way of love. It is about a man who needs the father's blessing to marry his daughter and the lyric is, “Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know. You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die. Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is 'No'” Although Romeo never asked for Lord Capulet's blessing, it is implied that he would’ve never given Romeo his blessing considering all the feuding between the families. You also realize that Lord Capulet is not very understaing because he couldnt understand that Juliet did not want to marry a man she did not love, so how could he ever understand her loving a man that their family despises. The song then goes on and says, “I’m gonna marry her anyway… I hate to do this, you leave no choice. Can't live without her.” Just like Romeo, he feels like there is no life without this girl. That’s when he decides to go against the family and marry the woman he loves

Even though Romeo and Juliet would get in trouble, they are already married and there isn’t much that the Capulets can do about it. All they wanted was for Juliet to be happy and married, so there shouldn’t be much of a problem since she is already both of those. If the Capulets got to know Romeo, they would realize he is not actually a terrible person and they probably wouldn’t end up killing him because it would cause Juliet more grief.…

Although Romeo and Juliet are star crossed lovers, their parents will never allow them to be, as the Capulets and Montagues have long since had a loathing towards each other. William Shakespeare's writings are often considered archaic and in most aspects they are, but in actuality they continue to relate to modern ideas, including dating. In Romeo and Juliet, the two main characters defy their parents by getting married in secret, and have a love so strong that in the end they commit suicide for each other.
