How Do Dispersants Mix Well With Water?

Improved Essays
These dispersants was injected into the oil well in hope of breaking up the oil. The dispersants could break down the oil by increasing speed of decomposing, diluting it or evaporating it before reaching surface and shores that could be harmful to underwater life. Dispersants are made of solvents that mix well with the oils being released; as well surfactants and these mix well with water making it hydrophilic. This issue is that oil does not mix well with water because it is a lipid and lipids are hydrophobic; does not mix well with water. It also is made up of hydrogen bonds that increase water’s surface tension keeping the oil over the water. The overall goal of using the chemical dispersants was to help break up the oil and

The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was a tragic mishap on BP’s behalf, killing several rig workers and having many other outreaching effects. The amount of crude oil that was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of approximately three months was 4.9 million barrels of oil and to go along with that, 2 million gallons of chemical dispersants to the Gulf. A major group of crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was discovered along the northern shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico. PAH effected several species of wildlife including Dolphins, the Tundra Peregrine Falcon, and shrimp. PAH or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, concentration levels in May 2010 were higher than in May 2011, a mere five times higher, which indicates…

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

Introduction: The purpose for this experiment is to carry out the dehydration of 2-methylcyclohexanol, which undergoes an E1 mechanism by following Saytzev’s rule to form different product such as 1-methylcyclohexanol, 3-methylcyclohexanol and methylenecyclohexane. The reaction can be dehydrated using sulfuric acid and H3PO4. The dehydration mechanism occurs in several steps like – 1. Converting the OH group into a better leaving group that is deprotonating with H3PO4. 2.…

In the experiment, I tested how soapy water would affect the amount of droplets the penny can hold. The results of my experiment show that the penny holds less droplets of soap water. When the soap is added to the water, the soap collides with water breaking down the tension. As a result, it harder for the droplets to hold together. To find whether my hypothesis was right, I did several of trials to figure out whether my hypothesis was correct.…

Our world is powered by petroleum and its by-products during refining. We enter wars, betray allies, and punish innocent lives all for the opportunity to rejoice in the lucrative industry of petroleum. It is like a sweet stash of candy for the sweet tooth. It doesn’t last forever or replenish once in a while and whoever has control over its extraction is the most formidable of the land. Long before the use of the golden oil humans were able to drive off the frigid winds of long winters with the heat provided by burning whale oil.…

In this study, we developed an anthracene-based fluorescence PET sensor (AMG) was developed for detecting high pH values and water content in organic solvents. A guanidine group as a proton receptor was covalently attached to an anthracene fluorophore to afford highly polar AMG, with reasonable solubility in highly basic solution. The fluorescence of AMG increased almost linearly with decreasing pH in the range 11.0–13.0. AMG also exhibited a fluorescence turn-on response to water in various organic solvents such as 1,4-dioxane, DMF, CH3CN, and EtOH. The peak intensity of the fluorescence was almost proportional to the amount of water.…

Benzalknoium salts are acknowledged as benzalknoium chloride, also known as BZK, BKC, BAC, alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and ADBAC. These salts are known to have several names and are also considered as cationic surfactants. Surfactants are compounds that subordinate the surface tension among two liquids or among a liquid and a solid. Surfactants have the availability to act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants. Benzalknoium salts are used in disinfectants, antiseptics, and preservatives which are imperative for medicines that ameliorate the nasal and eye.…

Molecules like cyclosporine that are non-ionisable, lipophilic and non-polar are challenging to formulate due to their low solubility and no effect of pH on solubility, and they are also solubilised in non-aqueous solutions composed entirely of organic solvents. The combination of polyoxyethylated castor oil and ethanol that are water miscible surfactants and solvents can be used to solubilise the non-polar active ingredient, cyclosporine. Therefore, the excipients are appropriate for the formulation. Polyoxyethylated castor oil is a surface active agent that increases the solubility of drugs that are poorly soluble in water with the formation of micelles. Surfactants have an amphipathic nature, so it will form micelles when placed in water,…

The millions of barrels of water that gushed into the ocean in April 2010 had a significant impact on the environment and the economic impact on the gulf coast. Even though the British Petroleum company and the US government tried to clean up the oil spill, there are till remnants of oil still in the gulf today. A couple weeks after the disaster occurred, the residents of the coast can see the impact it had on the environment by looking at their beaches and the surround marshlands.…

People were frantic trying to stop barrels oil that were gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, covering wildlife, and poisoning water in thick, unescapable oil. It took over 80 days to just stop the leak caused by an oil pipe explosion in 2010. Michael Klare, (2010) states the leak is “something that would not have occurred with proper corporate oversight” (p.1). Four years later, the government, organizations, and volunteers are still trying to clean up the millions of barrels that were dumped into the Gulf of Mexico. Oil is a source of energy that goes up in demand every day as the supply depletes.…

Immediate action must be taken to clean the oil from of the water to minimize the effects. The most common procedure is to contain the oil with plastic booms and then using skimming equipment to take oil off the top of the water. However, this strategy does very little to remove the oil from the ocean. Unfortunately, the fastest way to clean the oil spill is leaving it to break down and evaporate from the sun’s…
