3) Describe the different types of computers and their key distinguishing characteristics The following list outlines the five general classes of computers (Valacich et al, p.105).
• Supercomputers: are the most expensive costing approximately $1 million, are the most powerful using 5,000 or more GB, and are mostly used for scientific research
• Mainframe: are very large, have up to 3,000 GB of memory and are primarily used for transaction processing
• Server: small in nature, has up to 512 GB of memory and are used …show more content…
The infrastructure as a service (Iaas), Platform as a service (Paas), and software as a service (SaaS), are all service models of cloud computing. However, they all provide different types of services, for example, the IaaS model only provides basic capabilities such as data processing, storage, and networking. That being said, although the IaaS model provides the greatest flexibility the user is responsible for managing licenses and paying hefty set up fees. The PaaS model on the other hand, allows users to run their own applications which are normally designed by the provider. Although the user has control over the application, they have limited or no control over the infrastructure. Finally, the SaaS model allows the user to only use applications that are provided via the cloud. This model is the easiest of all three to deploy and as most maintenance and upgrades of software, applications are controlled by the provider (Valacich et al,
