How Diversity Changed My Life

Improved Essays
A common thing for us as humans to do is think “what if?” I tend to think of all the options of how my life could have been and how it would’ve affected me as a person, if things were a little different. I was born in Dallas, Texas a large town with a population of 1.258 million. My dad worked as a window installer which caused him to constantly fly around the state and because of this it was just my mom and I for the first 5 years of my life. Due to the high population there was a wide range of diversity among its people. This taught me at a young age to be acceptable of everyone, no matter of what background they derive from. However I was also taught that not everyone is a nice person and you can’t trust everyone. After a while my dad decided he wanted to quit his high paying job and start being at home, so we moved to the small town of Harper, Texas where I started first grade. …show more content…
Harper, Texas has a census of 1,000 and needless to say isn't as ethnically and culturally diverse as Dallas is. The majority here is of the same race and religious backgrounds. This was such a shock for me as a kid, how a 5 hour drive and change of scenery from city life to country could affect the variety of people. I have spent the rest of my life growing up in Harper and attending school at Harper ISD. Despite the difference of people, I learned something important while growing up here. With less people and the majority of them all coming from the same beliefs, there is less conflict, therefore a much lower crime rate. Everyone who resides here is very kind and respectful of others as opposed to in the city where the people there are mainly focus to on themselves.
Growing up in a small town had definitely changed me as a person for the better. I’ve learned the definition of true hospitality and to always assist others around me if they need it. I feel like if my family decided to stay in the city, I might be not be as caring or trusting of

The world that I come from is ever-changing and constantly interrupted. Growing up, I lived in Santee, California which is known for being a primarily white town that used to be home to a few white supremacist groups. My brother and I were frequently targeted because we were middle eastern minorities in a school that had very little diversity. My older brother used to come home suspended from high school for having conflicts and fights that had to do with his race.…

My spectrum of diversity did not reach its full potential until I got to college. Growing up in a predominantly white community, I never experienced anything outside of the familiarity of that community. Although it was never said outright, I knew that white people spent most of their time with mostly other white people and other races followed suit. I have always felt like I was part of a majority group. Almost everywhere I have ever gone in life, there has always been someone with the same and or similar characteristics that I have.…

This summer I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Chicago with my youth group. This experience changed my life in ways I cannot comprehend, and really opened my eyes to see how imperfect this world is and that a little help can go a long way. It was a great experience to dedicate my time to serve in multiple food kitchens, thrift stores, children centers, and church ministries. Going to a big city, where there is a lot of crime, people with nothing and living on the streets, children misbehaving in classes because at home the only way they can get attention sometimes is by misbehaving, is just very overwhelming. I love my community and I would not have wanted to be born and raised anywhere else, however living in such a small rural…

Being a student at Babson makes conversations about diversity really important. In a college where more than 30% of students are international, we have to be aware of how to benefit ourselves from that diversity. I resonate completely with what Julien Bourrelle claims in his Ted Talk. For us to be able to benefit from diversity, we need to adapt and understand others, otherwise misunderstandings will certainly cause conflicts. Being a Brazilian in an american school causes me to be really caution when taking specific action towards someone from a different culture.…

Diversity is defined as variety, especially the inclusion of people of different race or culture, which happens to be the focus of most diversity initiatives. Diversity in the workplace began in the United States after the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act when the US American industry began to see new categories of workers such as women and those with disabilities. In today’s world, the United States is considered a “melting pot” of ethnic cultures. Due to globalization, diversity has become a huge part of the workplace and therefore it is important for organizations to focus on trying to find ways to deal with having a diverse workforce. As quoted in the article Reflections on Diversity and Organizational development “diversity is an essential…

Diversity Essay As I set out to write this essay, I did what I usually do when I write. I made an outline and a few lists to help facilitate my writing. I began to draft a list of words to describe myself. The more I looked at these words the more I felt that they were just labels, like I should fit in a neat little box. A word doesn't describe me or my experiences.…

During our lives, we are always taught that diversity is important. However, often we are never taught what diversity is and why it is important. Often, people think of diversity as different skin colors, different ethnicities. To me, diversity means different opinions, different values, and different cultures, not just skin color. If everyone thinks the same and does the same thing, no progress would ever be made.…
