I would not of been hard for Leonato to verify whether the conviction of his daughter’s faithfulness was true of false. In the wedding scene, when Claudio accuses Hero of being disloyal it is a shock to everyone, especially the father. After the Claudio and Don Pedro leave, Hero’s father immediately starts yelling at her and began physically pushing her around. Since he felt this way, I believe he wanted Claudio and Don Pedro to feel just like him and that is why he said Hero was dead and sent them to mourn and write a speech about Hero, and then come back in the morning to marry the niece of Leonato, since no longer was Hero alive. Leonato definitely wanted these men to feel ashamed. He wanted them to feel ashamed that they had falsely accused a wonderful girl, ashamed that they had potentially killed her, and ashamed that they had to admit to everything through the speech and an arranged marriage. From everything that happens from the canceled wedding to the new wedding, I can grasp what it may have been like living in the 16th century. First of all, I can see how men are superior to women, in both politics and in general. In a way I think they are like trophy wives. I can also see how ones name is very important to how they are treated. For example, I believe that Leonato acted the way he did at the canceled wedding because he felt disgraced too and wanted to show everyone how he did not approve of his daughters actions.
