Anybody can have an accident where they bump into their garage door. It could be from something as simple as forgetting to open the garage door when backing out at night, or miscalculating how much room you have when pulling into your driveway. A small bump can be enough to cause some damage to the garage door opener, track, and the door itself. Even if it was a relatively minor bump, be prepared to do the following things.
Visually Inspect The Door
You shouldn’t assume that everything will be okay from a small bump, since you may run into unexpected problems when you go to open the garage door. Leave your car and give the garage door a visual inspection. Look for any imperfections that are capable of causing problems when the door opens and closes. A dent may prevent smooth movement from happening, cause pressure to damage the motor, or damage the rollers. Does the door rattle at all when doing so? Is there a sound that is not ordinary? Are the casters coming off the tack, indicating the track isn’t properly aligned? If so, it’s a sign that you caused some damage that needs to be repaired.
Keep in mind that this is should be done if the bump you made was minor. If you have an obvious dent in the garage door, you should avoid putting pressure on the door since you may cause additional damage.
