How Did World War 1 Start

“This is a war to end all wars” (President Woodrow Wilson). This war was called The Great War but now is called World War 1. World War 1 lasted for over four years. The war began July 28, 1914. Before war started, every country chose sides. Italy shows us how nationalism didn’t work during this time, and no one kept their alliances. Country were switching sides, and the reason the war started was because people couldn’t handle things in a more positive way. The underlying cause of World War 1 was Nationalism and Alliances. Nationalism is the belief that people should be loyal mainly to their country/nation (Chapter 13 section 1). Before the war, they set up two different sides. There was an triple alliance, and a triple entente. Great Britain, France, and Russia were apart of the triple entente. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy were apart of the triple alliance. This was broken because everyone declared war on eachother. It started off as Austria-hungary declaring war on Serbia. Then Russia ended up declaring war on on Austria- Hungary and so on causing most of Europe to be involved in this war. Instead of creating peace, they continued to declare war on eachother. This was a big cause because they could have avoided this war. If they was to keep their Alliances, then it would have never started. Instead, one declared war on the other, and it caused khaos. In conclusion, Alliances and Nationalism was the underlying cause of World War 1. They couldn’t keep their promise to keep peace within each other. Countries switching sides showed how they couldn’t trust everyone, and who wasn’t being loyal to a certain side throughout the whole war. If each country would have kept their peace, then there wouldn’t have been any need to choose any side in the first place. They should have handled things in a more positive
