World War I began on July 28th 1914, and lasted until November 11th 1918. The war was fought against the Central Powers and the Allies. The Central powers included Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria. Whereas the Allies was made up of 27 states, including France, Britain, Italy, Japan and United States. During this time Woodrow Wilson was the President of the United States. During his first term he was able to keep American troops out of the war. Tension grew between the United States and Germany, after several U.S. ships were damaged or sunk by German mines. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917, after Woodrow Wilson requested. It was on May 28, 1918, that the United States had its first sustained offensive battle. Fought against the Germans near Mont Didier, France. This battle is known as the Battle of Cantigny. Under the command of Major-General Robert Lee Bullard, four thousand US troops captured the village of Cantigny. The war continued with many more battles fought against the German and the Austro-Hungarian armies. The war ceased when the armistice took effect on the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. Germany called for an armistice, asking for a temporary cease fire in attempt to negotiate a lasting peace. It was on June 28, 1919 that the war officially ended. This is when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, in the Palace of Versailles in France. The treaty was negotiated among the Allied powers, and lacked German involvement. The treaty consisted of fifteen parts and four hundred and forty articles. Within the treaty it was declared that Germany's boundaries would be reassigned.
