A rifles is a gun, especially one fired from shoulder level, having a long spirally grooved barrel intended to make a bullet spin and thereby have greater accuracy over a long distance used in hunting or shooting competitions. The rifles used in World War 1 were cheap to produce, reliable, easy to carry, and very accurate. A normal rifle at the time held ten-cartridge magazine and could shoot around 500 meters. Also the rifles had very high recoil and this is bad because if you were trying to shoot something, you might not the target you wanted to hit. In a article it says that during the war many of the British soldiers used the Lee-Enfield 303 and the Germans used the 7.92mm Mauser. The guns used by these two groups were reliable and accurate but because of the low level of technology the guns could not shoot that far and they had very high recoil. Today the rifles used in war are a lot different than the rifles we used in World War 1, today they are able to shoot 2000 meters that is about 4x farther than the rifles back
