How Did William Carey Contribute To Education

William Carey’s missionary efforts did not go unrecognized, and he left a legacy of work in India. He is mainly known for his work in biblical translations and as the father of modern missions, but Carey also transformed many aspects of the Indian culture for good. Carey made major contributions in areas such as these; botany, economy, printing technology, agriculture, translation, education, libraries, women’s rights, and moral reform. Carey had a great interest in the environment and the agriculture in India, and he taught the people about their land, and of its abilities and potentials. He wrote essays on forestry and farming as well as founding the Agri-Horticultural Society in India, which promoted the conservation and care for the environment of India. His changes affected the agriculture of the land for the rest of time, as Indians were now able to grow and produce crops that they were not able to before. He also helped to increase printing technology, as translations could now be produced to the masses, rather than having to hand-write each translation of the Bible. Through Carey coming into Serampore with the press at the mission, he was able to produce hundreds of Bibles in almost 40 different languages, which was something which the people of India had never seen …show more content…
He established dozens of schools with his colleagues for both sexes. By disregarding and overcoming social norms, he helped to further educate boys and girls. Girls were never before welcomed or allowed to attend school, so this accomplishment was huge for the people of India. He also worked to establish the first college in Serampore, making it so that students may further their education and also have the opportunity to train as missionaries. Additionally, Carey established lending libraries, as they had not had public libraries
