Exam One: Subjective Portion The Renaissance Period in Europe was from 1485-1660. During this time period there was a rising group of middle class merchants. This is also during the infamous time when Christopher Columbus discovered the “New World” and started the massive migration to the Americas. This period will go down as one of the biggest culture movements, that this world has seen. During the Renaissance Period, a philosopher named Thomas More produced a book named, Utopia. Bradford and a few other explorers settled in Plymouth, since they were in exile from England. Their original land was territory in the Virginia area, but due to weather they ended up in Massachusetts. William later was elected Governor, shortly after they settled. In this time as a Governor, you were in control of everything that had to deal with your area, from the court to agriculture and trade. After moving to the colonies in 1620, the majority of Bradford’s biggest works came from the Americas. William Bradford’s work was mostly propagandistic because he was trying to inform others about his different experiences with God, and to get them to understand the “Word”. Bradford believed heavily that everyone should read and interpret the bible in their own way, and that God will continue to bless them. In Plymouth Plantation, Bradford illustrates on this when he says, “...they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of heaven, who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean...” (133).
