Johannes Kepler(12/27/1571 - 11/15/1630) was a German Astronomer, Mathematician, and Astrologer who lived in Weil der Stadt, Württemberg until he was an adult. While Kepler was a child he showed a very evident talent for mathematics. He was given a scholarship to the University of Tübingen to study for the Lutheran ministry. Kepler then became a mathematics teacher at a seminary school in Graz, Austria. But Kepler was soon forced from his position due to a counter reformation and he became the assistant of Tycho Brahe, an Astronomer, who later died in 1601 and Kepler was given his position.…
According to Elizabeth Howell, a Ph.D. student studying aerospace sciences, one of Keck’s first major discoveries was finding an exoplanet around a star by detecting the wobble it produces. It was one of the first independent confirmations of a planet. Its next major discovery was in 2000 when Keck measured the motion of stars around a black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy which helped astronomers determine the exact center of the Milky Way. There were two large discoveries made by Keck in 2005. The first is when it found that the diameter of the Andromeda galaxy is three times further than thought having estimates of 220,000 light years across compared to the previous estimate of 70,000 light years.…
Another scientist was named, Kepler, he was studying the Astronomy as well. He was known as one of the last “scientific astrologers.” Being that he studied astronomy Kepler was trying to explain when the spacing of planet orbits are in the solar system. He also found many relationship between the planets, which corresponded with numbers, and formed three laws called the “Kepler’s Laws” (“Historical Settings”). The final scientist during Andreas’ time was Newton.…
Stephen Tegler, the chairman of Northern Arizona University, announces that the school is going to offer an Astronomy doctorate program. It has taken decades but it is finally happening. The Scientific Revolution Some people consider the development of science the most important event in all history. This all started in 1543 when the Scientific Revolution began after the Reformation. The Scientific Revolution led to the birth of modern day science. Scientists started by observing the world around them. By observing the world, scientists began to identify facts about it.…
Claudius Ptolemy, was well known as a mathematician, astronomer, and geographer. Little information is known about details of his life to this point. No one exactly knows where he was born, but Egypt is a good assumption, nor where he died. One reason why Egypt is believed to be his birthplace is due to his name Ptolemy, an Egyptian name. While Claudius is a Roman name, this indicates he lived under the Roman rule of Egypt with the privileges and political rights of Roman Citizenship.…
We’ve all heard of Galileo, Newton, Copernicus, but there are much more Renaissance scientists who you never get to learn about. Some you hear about, some you don’t. Tycho Brahe is unknown to most but now you can hear about his part of history. Tycho Brahe was a Danish scientist who revolutionized astronomy with his work and made groundwork for greater scientists ahead of him. Tycho was born on December 14, 1546 in Denmark under a wealthy king and queen.…
ways of the church. He stated, “It surely is harmful to souls to make it heresy to believe what is proved.” He was ultimately confined to house arrest towards the end of his life. Galileo is responsible for developing modern astronomy. He enlightened many people during the Renaissance in Italy, and he continues to enlighten all of us today.…
