Tommy Douglas was a man of great determination and influence, because of this he helped Canada be shaped into the wonderful country that it is today. His determination helped influence our universal medicare by allowing hospital care for everyone, regardless of their economic or social situation. He had so much influence, that people really listened to him and his passionate speeches. Therefore, Tommy Douglas’ determination changed the way healthcare works and became one of the first leaders of the new democratic party, this caused him be very significant to Canadian history.

That’s when CCF appeared. CCF was a social democratic party formed by the combination of left-wing labor and farm organizations. In 1944 Douglas resigned his seat in parliament to lead Saskatchewan’s CCF party in their provincial election. He was an amazing speaker who delivered captivating speeches over the radio or to large groups. In the 1944 Saskatchewan provincial election, Douglas led the CCF to a crushing win by taking 47 of the 52 seats. After this, he won four more elections and remained premier of Saskatchewan By 1960 the national CCF started to fall from glory. Although, by 1961 he stopped being the premier of Saskatchewan and he became the national leader of the new democratic party and helped them. From 1961 to 1971 Douglas remained as the NDP leader, then he continued to serve as a MP until he retired from politics in 1979.
Tommy Douglas was very significant to Canadian history because he was premier and was the leader of the CCF party. People knew his reputation as a passionate and eloquent speaker, which increased his influence.
