How Did Tom Robinson Amuse The Jury In To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
Obviously Tom Robinson’s side of the story does not amuse the jury and they do not believe him because he is a black man and at the time Maycomb was very segregated. Mayella who is a white woman states her case and the jury obviously listens because there is a racial difference. A long time ago there was segregation and that was when blacks and whites were separated. They were separated by school, bathrooms, water fountains and basically anything you could think of. They were also called different names. If you were black you would be called “boy” but if you were a white male or female then you would be called Mr. or Misses. Back then many people didn't trust other races and it was heavily segregated and it influences this court case so much

In this story the Author makes me wonder if Tom Robinson will be guilty or not. Tom can be guilty for many different reasons. During the trial Tom is asked if he ever went to Mayella’s house more than once and he responds saying, “I went lots of times” (Lee 255). The fact that he went to Mayella’s house many times showed that he had many interactions with her. He would help her because he was sorry for her…

Tom Robinson, as know is a colored man in a time where colored people were treated differently than white people because of their skin color, as if white people were more superior. For a colored man to commit a crime as such Tom Robinson was accused for was horrible. People treated Tom like a monster, as if he was an animal not a human. Tom was obviously innocent, he never raped or abused Mayella but because of his skin color the jury could not let him go free because it would bring shame to Mayella and her family. I cannot relate to this, however I have heard racist jokes, slurs, and other mean things said in those matters and I am against racism.…

Before the trial had started, Knowing they would accuse Tom Robinson because every white person in this town thinks that every black man will put his hands on a white women even though that is not the case at all in my opinion. I had hope for Tom in the trial but sadly he did not make it. I had too much hope I suppose, but again the whites are always put before us unfortunately. I was just destroyed when they said he was guilty for raping Mayella Ewell. This is not fair.…

When it came to the trial of Tom Robinson in “To Kill A Mockingbird”, despite the significant evidence pointing to his innocence, the jury found him guilty of rape and convicts him. When questioning why he was found guilty, the overall persona of the jury comes into play. Rather than being diverse in gender, race, and ethnicity, the jury consisted of only 12 white men. Being that the story is set in the 1930’s, a time when racism ruled the south, it was almost inevitable that Tom would receive an unfair trial due to not only the lack of diversity amongst the jury, but also the racial views that the jurors withheld. “During the trial, when Tom Robinson testifies that he did not rape Mayella and in fact she propositioned him, the jury refuses…

The jury took an immense amount of time to return a verdict involving a black man in opposition to a white man. This was a first for Maycomb; this has never happened in the past years. As Atticus explains to Scout and Jem, “That jury took a few hours. An inevitable verdict may be, but usually it takes ‘em just a few minutes” (297). Atticus mentions that for cases like this one, it was always in favour of the white man.…

“So that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as one thing only, over and over again, and that is what they become.” Says Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explaining that a single story is a story that people use against others even though that story doesn’t explain their whole life. In the small town Maycomb, the main characters Scout and Jem hear how their neighbors and friends use single stories to judge others. They learn to listen and look for other stories instead of giving in to having only one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows how people in Maycomb use single stories to judge a person or group.…
