Jefferson was slowly turning into a symbol of American freedom. To help develop a strong government, you need an important and trustworthy leader. In 1774, Jefferson published his first major political work, “A Summary View of the Rights of British America”. This work put Jefferson on the map by getting noticed by more popular advocates of the American cause (“Thomas”). In June 1776, Jefferson began to draft the Declaration of Independence--a document stating America’s freedom from Britain (“American”). Jefferson succeeded Benjamin Franklin as minister to France in 1785. There, Jefferson became involved in the French Revolution. During this time, political difficulties began to develop and the two groups, the Federalists and the Democratic-republicans began to form; Jefferson slowly sided with the Federalists quickly becoming their leader (“American”). The Federalists sympathized with the revolutionary cause in France (Which was not unlike the American Revolution). Jefferson attacked Federalist policies and, “opposed a strong centralized Government and championed the rights of states”
