After World War II Germany was vulnerable and up for grabs. The Soviet Union jumped at the chance to claim the land with a communist flag. They approached and settled in the east, enforced their rules and spread out among Germany. The U.S. saw and defended the country. The U.S. appeared in the west and began to hold back the Soviet from sweeping the whole country. Germany became divided. The U.S. protected the west and the Soviet enforced on the east. Residents of the east flocked to the west in hopes of living in an economy where they could flourish and not be as controlled.
