This was because of the slave trade. Europeans started to ‘capture’ the Africans so they can take them back to Europe and work as slaves. European’s decided to do this because when they first saw the lifestyle of Africans they thought they were uncivilised because they didn’t have the modern technology at that time. The African slaves were taken to the Middle East and other parts of the world too. Packed tightly on the ship and was described as, ‘books stacked on a bookshelf.’ The Africans had no idea what was happening and they were really scared and clueless as they were randomly taken from their lifestyle and country, chained down onto a ship and taken to another country. It was hard for them to communicate as they were from different cultures. They had to go to the bathroom wherever they could, this caused many people to die because of the diseases going around. Many did not survive this journey and it is stated that one in five died, some committed suicide as they believed that dying was better than living as a slave. This is shown through Olaudah Equiano’s first hand account written in 1789.

Slaves were used as cheap labour resulting the employers to become or maintain their wealthiness. This caused many more Africans to be captured from their home country. Before they were sold, they were ‘seasoned’ to look healthy and strong to auction them off at higher prices. Their strength and abilities contributed to the prices they sold

However, the Europeans had access to another cheap labor market that already existed, the African Slave Trade. After the initial kidnapping, the Africans would go through multiple inspections during which their captors would look for things such as deformities, narrow chests, or anything that could restrict them from working. If approved, the Africans would board a ship the same night. In certain places, rejected Africans would be beheaded.…

Europeans decided to use Africans in the new world because the Native Americans stopped their slavery. Before the Europeans went to Africa for slaves the Native Americans were slaves, but three things put a stop to it. First, the Indians were all dying of epidemic diseases, which Africans had already been exposed to. Second, the Indians, being native, had a better knowledge of the land and its peoples, which made escape/revolt attempts more likely to be successful. Third, in response to debates about Spain and Portugal's treatment of indigenous people, the pope issued a bill in 1531 that banned the enslavement of American Indians.…
