How did the Peace Corps get started? When the Peace Corps was made in the USA it was started by John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961. Some other people that helped come up with the idea or have improved on that idea are Harris Wofford, Sargent Shriver, and Eunice Kennedy Shriver. This was started around the time when the United States was at war or just finished and lots of people were homeless or they need help surviving and getting food, homes. or jobs. Kennedy thought this was a good idea and started it then. Kennedy learned about the Peace Corps through other countries because they have it too but there's are a little different. Other countries do what we do but others have it where they have peaceful police without guns just tasers and if they cannot contain it they will bring in a different type of police with guns but only if necessary. The main reason the Peace Corps is doing what they do is to stop fighting and have world peace so they don't need volunteers to do these jobs and that everyone can focus on helping serve than to fight wars. Some other reasons might be to end homelessness or hunger. Right know there are over 220,000 volunteers and that number is still growing. They are in over 140 different countries with volunteers serving in them.
