“The Industrial Revolution was another of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization,” Stephen Gardiner. From the steamboats, to the locomotives, to the iron mills and factories, they all changed life as Americans knew it. People started building things like huge buildings as hotels in the city. The Industrial Revolution changed the way all people lived, worked, traveled, and communicated.

There were many revolutionary inventions that changed the way people worked and lived. One of those is the cotton gin. It was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. It could process 50 pounds of cotton in a day. Eli Whitney did not plan on it encouraging slavery but it did. Eli Whitney also made muskets with interchangeable parts that were

Then William Henry, John Stevens, and John Fitch put the engine on a boat. It didn't go so well, and they had a lot of problems. That was until Robert Fulton was successfully able to put it on a steamboat on the Hudson River in 1807. There were still some setbacks, like when the steam built up the boat would explode. Steamboats allowed even faster travel. People saw how fast they could go on the boat so they decided to put the steam engine on a train. The train could go 20 miles an hour. The train pulled open stagecoaches so embers would fly off and land on people's clothes and set them on fire, but they still risked ridding the train because it was a faster way to travel. They thought that it would be good for shipping goods across the United States.

Cities were becoming ever more popular. By 1850 only 85% of Americans lived on farms. Technology made life easier and faster so more people started to live in urban settings. Technologies, such as indoor plumbing, telegraphs, and elevators drew people to the cities. Things like indoor plumbing made people's lives easier because they did not get as sick as before. The telegraph made communication easier, and bigger buildings made it easier for people to stay in the
