Fort Point was created between 1853 and 1861. It was intended to be a part of a defense system of forts would protect the San Francisco Bay's commercial and military installations against foreign attack. After the civil war, it was used intermittently as an army barracks. Fort point was initially intended to be destroyed for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, due to its location underneath the bridge, but Cheif Engineer Joseph Strauss created a special arch that allowed it to be preserved.
