Many of the European colonists that had arrived in the Americas before the French had forced the Native American tribes off their land. An example of this was when the Puritans, with the help of the Narragansett, massacred the Pequots in order for them to have more land. Unlike the British, the French had paid the Hurons for the land. They have not only treated the Hurons with respect by paying them, but have also become great allies. However, one may point out that the English has a strong army and strong militias. The militiamen from New England were able to defeat all of the Native American that were found in the New England area. Although this is true, the English still had not been respectful to the Native American tribes. Though they are allied with the tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy, they use them as puppets. The French are fur trappers who were looking to trade furs with Native American tribes. In exchange, the French gave the Native Americans European goods such as metal tools. Unlike other Europeans, the French did not cheat the Native Americans in trade. It was mutually beneficial between the two groups. However, the English also traded with the local Native American tribes in their area. An example of this is in the north where the British also traded for furs with the local native american tribes. They traded for guns and other European goods. However, the intent for English trade was to take control of the hunting grounds and turn it into farming grounds. In addition to that, the English had more of a one way trade, where they would receive more furs than they gave European goods. The few goods they did give in exchange for the furs were guns and alcohol. The intention that the British had when giving the Native Americans alcohol and guns was to slowly wipe out the Native Americans. The guns would be used by the Native American tribes to fight against each other, as done so in the Pequot War.
