The story of Ferguson Tractors starts not with building tractors but Aero Planes. Harry Ferguson in 1902 went to work for his brother Joe in a bicycle shop and car repair. While working there he found and exciting interest in aviation.
In 1909 Ferguson became the first person to fly in Ireland when he just all of a sudden took off on a monoplane he had designed. After he had a falling out with his brother over the safety of the planes he was building he went at it alone. He designed and built over three hundred planes with a man he hired that was very experienced in metal fabrication. Ferguson then found out his production of planes was a failure.

The model name came from Tractor, England 20 horsepower but is affectionately known as the Little Grey Fergie. There were several variants of the TE20; the first tractors were designated TE20 Using an imported Continental Z120 engine. In 1948 the TEA20 was introduced with a Standard brand petrol engine, following the introduction of the TED20. Later a diesel model was introduced, the TEF20. There were other models with narrow wheelbases for working in vineyards and orchards, such as the TEB20 and TEC20.
Over 500,000 Fergusons were built between 1946 and 1956, and many survive today. So successful was the TE20 as sales of the tractor spread across the world. Some were used on an expedition to the South Pole in 1958 by Sir Edmund Hillary, a testament to the durability of the machine. Ford ultimately settled the legal proceedings with a multi-million dollar sum that allowed Ferguson to further expand his own manufacturing
