Manson was referred to both as "God" and "Satan" by his followers, yet still controlled their lives completely. As the family's leader, he claimed he was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, demanding the submission and faith of his followers. Acting on Manson’s demand, The Family committed their first murder of Gary Hinman on July 31, 1969. A little over a week later, on August 9, 1969, a series of mass murders occurred at the home of Sharon Tate Polanski. The victims of the infamous "Tate" homicides were all shot and/or stabbed multiple times on the grounds of the estate, or inside the house itself. The victims were: Abigail Folger, Steven Parent and Voiytek Frykowski (all found deceased on the grounds surrounding the house), Sharon Polanski, and Jay Sebring (found deceased inside of Polanski’s home). Tate, 8 months pregnant at the time, died from numerous stab wounds, including five of which that would have fatal by themselves. Sebring died of blood loss, however both were found with a single rope over a rafter tied around their necks. The next homicides, named the "LaBianca murders," occurred two days after the “Tate” homicides in the home of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, and were both found stabbed dozens of times with multiple fatal wounds. The Family’s last murder was that of Donald Shea, who was previously a hired worker on Spahn Ranch.
