How Did The D-Day Invasion Affect World War II?

World War II Began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. In response Britain and France declared war on Germany. World War II lasted 6 years ending in 1945 with the dropping of the atomic bomb by the United States on Japan. Millions of lives were changed around the world due to events that occurred in World War II. One of the main events was the military invasion known as Operation Overlord also known as D-Day. The many events of D-Day had a major affect on World War II and as a result we honor it today. D-Day occurred on June 6 1944 when allied troops landed on the beach of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed commander of operation. D Day was is considered the largest amphibious military operation in history. The city of Paris was freed in August of 1944. D-Day opened a new front in Europe and forced the Germans to fight a two front war. The Germans were fighting the Soviets on one front and the British, Canadians, and Americans on the other front. The Germans counterattacked but were not as fast at getting reinforcements in to fight the Allies. Germany was not successful at fighting a two front war, therefore the D-Day invasion led to the war in Europe ending more quickly with less casualties. Due to the success and importance of the invasion Americans honor D-Day in several ways throughout the United States. There are memorials located throughout the United States that honor D-Day, such as the one in Bedford, Virginia. There is also a D-Day monument located in Washington, D.C. that honors the soldiers that fought in D-Day. The National World War II Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana has a dedicated section that honors the events of D-Day. Recent President's of the United States have visited these sites on the anniversary of D-Day to honor the Allied soldiers that died on that
