Leaders during the civil rights movement were Martin Luther King Jr., James Farmer and Malcolm X. Two of the three preached of nonviolent means to get their message across. Malcolm X tended to align himself with the militant side of the rights movement. He was part of the Nation of Islam but became disillusioned with the organization. After separating from the group, he was assassinated by their leader.
