The Chimney Sweeper 1789 and 1794 In the chimney sweeper both kids work and were forced to clean chimneys. They both talk about their families and about their lives and how hard they had it during this times. They both describe how they feel and how cleaning was something children would do if they would be born in this era. In the first poem which was in 1789 the little boy explains how his mother died when he was young and started right away with a dark beginning. He mentioned that his dad sold him right away when his mom died probably because he didn’t want to take care of him. He also says how many other people died and that he was surrounded by coffins due to a lot of deaths. This proves how unhappy he was and how this impacted him a lot. He suffers and in different kind of words he provides evidence that he always expects deaths. This kind of dissapointments leads to depression like the one he gets into after every death. …show more content…
The reason they do and the reason they are unhappy is because they make their son work and clean the chimneys and they can’t do anything about it. They know that the world they live in is tough and they wished they didn’t have to put their kid through that pain and that life with no future. Also the kid in this poem was happy even though he had to forcibly clean he still loved his parents and danced and sang while he would do what they had asked him to do. In both of the poems they both show death. In the first one the little boy mentioned all the deaths around him because of how the situation back then was and the other boy mentioned “they clothed me in clothes of death” also referring to several deaths and how everyone expects them to die while they work for them. They both mention god in their poems and how god was good, but still was unfair to have that kind of life awaiting

    Last Words of the Prophet is an interesting poem, because it has no known author (Anonymous) except Washington Matthews, who only translated it. I could not find anything about this poem online; there are completely no traces of it anywhere beside the book (or perhaps I did not research hard enough).
