But they did for the gold. Everybody wanted to get rich off of gold mining. Even though not everybody did. Once people started arriving in California, that set off the huge population boom. Thousands ended up in areas like San Francisco and Sacramento. As soon as you arrived, your mind was set on gold. People would do whatever was necessary to find it to get rich, which, sadly, included the killings of hundreds of other people. People were money hungry and did those things only because they wanted to find gold. You could easily start mining gold by grabbing a spare pick that was lying around. In the beginning, finding gold was super easy. It was usually found in the streambeds in rivers, and it flickered so it was also easy to spot. The way that gold was mined so successfully set up other states’ gold rushes. Colorado’s Gold Rush, which started in 1858, led to the Creation of the Colorado Territory. The California Gold Rush had an impact almost everywhere. with a lot of people getting even the tiniest bit of money out of it. They could charge lots of money for appointments and make thousands of dollars working in California trying to “strike it rich” in a different way. One of the biggest clothing companies that is known worldwide today started in California during the Gold Rush. Levi Strauss was a merchant who arrived in California in 1853. Strauss began his career by beginning to make pants for gold field workers. Originally called “blue jeans,” they were highly demanded in the gold fields due to the fact that they would not tear when gold was put into the pockets, like other pants did. Today, Levi, Strauss & Co are among the top sellers of jeans and other apparel. They are a huge retail company and wouldn’t of gotten their start with a bit of hope for the future and entrepreneurial startup. Even the smallest of things in California worked out for people with big dreams. People made tons of money living in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and other cities in the Bay Area. The downside to the gold rush and money, is that prices soared. A simple breakfast costed as much as you had made on the day.
