Have you ever looked through a pet store window and saw a cute little snake with a sign that read “Burmese Python?” Well if you love snakes you’re likely to think “how awesome” or “I’ve absolutely got to have it.” This happens all too often and the buyer doesn’t do their research like a responsible pet owner. In Florida, where it is very much like their native home in Southeast Asia, these pythons are taking over the Everglades. The Burmese python does not make good pets because of their massive size and are often let go in the backwoods of Florida. Now because of irresponsible people, Florida officials are now taking a stand to decrease this huge snake’s population. That’s is where the Python Challenge has come in. The Burmese python has negative changes on people, the ecosystem, and local animals.

Most people can barely handle a large dog, but imagine a twenty-three-foot snake that weighs about two hundred pounds. That’s is as big as a telephone pole. According to Source one, they are “native to grassy marshes in Southeast Asia,” and they thrive in the humid temperatures that make up the Florida Everglades. These colossal creatures are causing major damage to Florida’s ecosystem. The text states in source one that civilians are turning the snakes back into the wild, which is one of the worst things you can do for your unwanted pet. These snakes may look remarkable, but they are not meant to be pets and should not be able to be sold because of the changes they’ve put the people
