There have been many pen names used by many famous authors in history. There many benefits to it and its very common in literature. publishing used to be different back then and things like being a girl writer or publishing more than one book per year per author were frowned upon so authors used fake names or, pen names, to hide their identity. A lot of authors like Stephen King, J.K Rowling, and Charlotte Bronte have used pen names for many different reasons like, to publish more books, to explore more genres and, to be taken more seriously.
Stephen King use a pen name of Richard Bachman to be able to publish more books. As stated in “Who is Richard Bachman” By J.K Campbell, “It was common practice for publishers to release only one book per year”. With this second name he could do twice as much. Richard Bachman was very successful and published his book “Thinner” which sold 28,000 copies. Also, Stephen King used this pen name to also analyze his own success in his writing career. He was able to test his theory if he was successful because of his talents or luck. Eventually his identity was revealed in 1985 when a bookstore owner perceived that Bachman’s and kings writing styles were very similar.

But the change of becomes J.K. Rowling instead of her real name Joanne Rowling was unnecessary. She became very successful of the Harry Potter series with a wide spread of audience members. Actually, she became so successful that when she wanted to explore the genre of detective novels she had to turn to another pen name of Robert Galbraith, so she didn’t have the background of Harry Potter to pressure her and to compare to.
