How Did Slavery Cause The Civil War

There were many reasons for the Civil War. The main reason though was because of slavery. Slavery was the main cause of the Civil War because it caused issues with states rights, it caused problems with territorial expansion, and slavery was the cause of problems between the North and South over economy. To begin with, slavery was the main cause of the Civil War because it caused problems with states rights. States rights refers to the struggle between the federal government and separate states over political power. Now before and during the Civil War this struggle was focused heavily on the institution of slavery and whether or not the federal government had the right to regulate or possibly even abolish slavery altogether within an individual state. The South wanted to spread Westward to gain more control over land, but this failed since a Republican by the name of Abraham Lincoln was elected president. After Lincoln was elected the president the South was afraid that he would make them free their slaves so what did they do, they seceded from the North. People have said that the real cause of the Civil War was because of politics. They say this because not even a full year after Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president South Carolina seceded for the North. Even though politics and the election of Abraham Lincoln most likely had some significance to the start of the Civil War. A lot of what politics was fighting over involved slavery. When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president even though he was a major opponent of the expansion of slavery he said he would not interfere with slavery where it already existed.
