Shakespeare friend James Burbage built the globe theater in 1599. Shakespeare became a shareholder with the globe theater to make some money and put on plays from a place he owned. Since Shakespeare was part of Lord Chamberlain’s men, the group started performing there. The first play that Shakespeare put on in the globe was Julius Caesar. In 1613 on June 29 during the play Henry VIII there was wadding from the stage cannon that ignited the thatched roof. The globe burned down to the ground in less than two hours. The globe was rebuilt right on the spot where it was burned down. It was the same size and shape but it was better looking than the first time. The second globe was given a tiled roof so that it would not burn down again. In 1642 the puritans believed that theaters were places of “evil sin” instead of entertainment. Sam Wanamaker came up with the Shakespeare Globe Trust in 1970 that could make the globe a possibility. He put the current globe into motion. Sam died before the new globe was finished in June 1997.
