"All the world's a stage. " Those words will stand immortal through history. Shakespeare had a world very different from the one we live in today; he had a world of the Renaissance; of the Elizabethan Age; a world of exploration, discovery and art. The influence of William Shakespeare’s plays on modern culture, especially in television and movies, is apparent. The plot of Disney’s the Lion King is based off of the plot for Hamlet; Arthur Laurents’ West Side Story is loosely based off of the plot of Romeo and Juliet, and Twelfth Night has been the basis for countless teenage romantic comedies. Aside from regurgitating the same overused plots for blockbuster movies, public figures can be found quoting Shakespeare in their speeches, interviews, and even on tattoos. In fact, Shakespearean themes and details are so embedded within our culture that the original context is frequently overlooked, ignored, and even forgotten. Individuals may use parts of a work to emphasize a point, regardless of…

Shakespeare was written over 400 years ago, so Robshaw says,” Even the key selling point that many Shakespearisms have entered common usage is gradually losing its force as the years go by.(401)” Since Shakespeare is so old many in this time who like Shakespeare think it’s old too. Shakespeare had both a positive and negative influence on society because he gave the English language many new words and he helped people understand emotions, but he was also very misogynistic and immoral. One of the ways Shakespeare had a positive impact on society was how he increased the vocabulary of English speakers. Shakespeare invented around 1700 new words, switching verbs, nouns and adjectives, adding prefixes and suffixes to already existing words, connecting words together, and just creating new words wholly. Some of these words he created we use every day, such as “addiction” (Othello), “eventful” (As You Like It), and “eyeball” (The Tempest).…

Many writers of the time were self-conscious literary artists but Shakespeare seemed to be more intent on the entertainment value of his plays and less on being a classicist. So he drew on various sources and themes from classical to popular culture. He used the literary traditions not just to give his characters beautiful poetry to recite but also to explore popular concepts; often this exploration used humour and satire to explore Elizabethan ideas. In Midsummer Night’s Dream Shakespeare explores the themes of courtly love and pastoral romance once again (see As You Like It) and with more comic effect.…
