In the early 1950’s, documents show Shakespeare was a managing partner in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, acting company in London. Around 1594, he became an important member of this company. Records show that Shakespeare had works published and sold as popular literature. He was able to attract the attention of Henry Wriothsley, Earl of Southampton, whom he dedicated his first and second poems- “Venus and Adonis: and “The Rape of Lucrece”. By 1597, 15 out of 37 plays written by Shakespeare were published. He purchased the second largest house on Stratford, known as the “New House”, for his family. It was believed that he spent most time in the city writing and acting. He came home once a year during the 40 day Lenten period, when the theaters closed. In 1599, Shakespeare and his business partners built their own theater. He purchased leases of real estate near Stratford for 440 pounds. Later, it doubled in value and earned him 60 pounds a year. This made him into an entrepreneur and artist. Scholars believed these investments gave him time to write his plays
