How Did Serbia Cause Ww1

The country of Serbia greatly affected the beginning of the First World War in many ways. Some claim that Serbia held the greatest amount of responsibility for the start of World War I. One of the major things that Serbia did to get people angry is that they were trying to expand their territory and they supported the Black Hand terrorist which was not a good combination. The Black Hand terrorist were a secret Serbian society who were planning the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This secret society was formed in 1911 and was led by Captain Dragutin Dimitrijevic, also referred to as 'Apis'. This group mainly consisted of army officers and some government officials.

The first attacks from Austria fell on Serbia's capital, Belgrade. Once the other European counties heard what Austria did they wanted to get involved as well. Russia heard about the attack on Belgrade and sure enough ordered a general mobilization of their troops on July 30th. Germany understood this as Russians decision to go to war so they ordered their own mobilization as well. Even though Tzar Nicholas II (Russia) and Kaiser Wilhelm (Germany) were actively communicating, they both failed to get the point across that they were doing these actions just in case something were to happen. On August 1st Germany declares war on Russia. At this time France and Belgium start full mobilization. Then, August 3rd, Germany declares war on France and invades Belgium. Britain sends a statement to Germany saying "halt the invasion of Belgium or face war with Britain as well." On August 4th, Britain declares war on Germany. Also on the 4th, the United States of America declares it neutrality. On August 6th, Austro-Hungary declares war on Russia. Also the French and British troops invade the German colony of Togo on Africa. The German governor then surrenders. From August 7th to the 24th is the fire major event in the French and German war. The French army invades Alsace and Lorraine (Germany) but they are met by Germans. 27,000 French soldiers die on the one
