Romeo and Juliet, a classical yet tragic play written by William Shakespear is very well known. The sad ending is that the two lovers, Romeo and Juliet end up killing themselves, but no one knows who caused them to take their own lives. There are many characters who participated in causing Romeo and Juliet to commit suicide, but the character who most contributed to causing the death of the two lovers was Friar Laurence.
When Juliet and Romeo first met they believed that they were in love, even though it was only their first day meeting one another. Romeo and Juliet decided that the only way to practically seal the deal between them two is to get married. Later, Romeo went to Friar Laurence to ask him to arrange a marriage in secret and Friar Laurence responded "In one respect I'll thy assistant be;" meaning that he agreed to help Romeo arrange a secret marriage (2: iv: 90). While talking to Friar Laurence Juliet says, "And with this knife I'll help it presently.", which means that she is threatening to kill herself with the knife if she marries Paris (4: i: 54). Friar Laurence now knows that Juliet is thinking of suicide and instead of doing the responsible thing and take the knife away from her, he tries to come up with a solution to help Juliet not marry Paris. Friar Laurence tells Juliet to "Take thou this vial, being then in bed," which he is giving her is a sleeping potion to help her trick her family in thinking that she is dead, so that she can later flee with Romeo (4: i: 93). By Friar Laurence giving Juliet the sleeping potion, it causes Romeo to believe that Juliet is dead in which creates a reason for Romeo to kill himself and he did take his own
