The first attempt to settle in America was in a settlement called Roanoke by an English explorer named Sir Walter Ralegh. Although it was attempted to make the settlement successful, Roanoke was a failure. In fact, when the colony’s governor came to Roanoke all of the people were gone and the only thing that was left in the whole settlement to find was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree. In 1607, the Virginia Company funded a group of English settlers to go to North America and make a settlement, which is now known as Jamestown. (A Short History of Jamestown) Jamestown was a deathtrap for the settlers. In fact, most of the people that came to settle Jamestown died and only a few remained. After realizing this, Captain John Smith stepped up to be the leader and helped with the survival of the settlers, but however that did not mean that Jamestown was very successful at the time.
