Edgar Allen Poe has influenced American literature in a variety of ways by introducing dark emotion and horror into poetry.
Poe is known as the father of dark poetry and literature. Poe was a standout poet during his time due to his seemingly lack of emotion when writing, and also because he was the first writer to base his poetry off the dark side of life, and questioning the unknown. Edgar himself even states he was awkward and insane. As Poe states in the poem Alone “I have not been as others were—I have not seen as others saw” In this line Poe is elaborating on the idea that he isn’t normal, he never visualized life as everyone else did. Just as everyone else saw him an awkward poet Poe seemed to embrace these titles in the short story Berenice Poe stated “It is more than probable that I am not understood” here Poe seems to embrace his lack of conformity and his standout image. Poe was a lonely individual losing both his parents by the time he was 3 years old, and then losing his beloved wife/ cousin at age 25.
