How do you think Eliezer Wiesel’s experiences changed him? The novel “ Night” was written by Elie Wiesel and was published in 1956. “ Night” is an autobiography based on Elies experiences at a Nazi German concentration camp. He got separated from his siblings and mother along the way. He was left with his dad and they both did whatever possible for them to survive.…
Night In Elie Wiesel’s Night, Wiesel and millions of other Jews are subjected to some very cruel and degrading things that violate our “Human Rights”, here are some examples that show these violations during the Holocaust. The first example of a violation is on page 14 when the Jews were told to pack up and get ready for a forced evacuation, that example violates “Article Nine” of “Human Rights”. The forced exile or detention from their homes was very uncalled for, the Germans or Hungarians just marched in and told all the Jews to get packed up and leave.…
From 1864 to 1865 Andersonville, GA was the site of a huge military prison for the confederacy. It was officially called Camp Sumter and was highly known for its horrible conditions and high death rate. In History.com’s article “Andersonville” it says, “In all, approximately 13,000 Union prisoners perished at Andersonville, and following the war its commander, Captain Henry Wirz (1823-65), was tried, convicted and executed for war crimes.” This camp was highly feared and the conditions in which the prisoners were held were definitely horrible to say the least. It was not a place you wanted to be at all.…
If given the choice, would you rather die on the battlefield quickly, or waste away in a prison camp for the rest of your life? The 215,000 soldiers that were captured by the Union did not get the choice. Prison camps, at the time, were considered one of the most disturbing, traumatic places on earth. Of what prisoners have told us, Union prison camps are even worse. Andersonville may not be perfect, but Camp Elmira in New York -nicknamed hellmira- is so much worse.…
Summary Just Mercy is a book written by Bryan Stevenson. The book tells stories of justice and redemption in America. People are often wrongly-convicted; some spend years in jail while others get put on death row for crimes they did not commit. People on death row usually are given lawyers that do not care about proving them innocent. The American justice system’s unfairness has affected many people, especially those whom are part of the African-American society as well as high poverty areas.…
Throughout their sentence, prison inmates endured miserable life before and during the Prison Reform Movement of 1800’s, unlivable conditions, and physical abuse from the guards. “Men rarely become spiritually better by being made subject, through human discipline, to extreme bodily discomforts; these convicts are not made morally better by such treatment as they are subjected to here in the days of bodily weakness and pain” (Lightner 56). Prison Reform Movement from 1870-1930, greatly changed what type of treatment that was acceptable in prisons towards the inmates, much of these changes were due to the effort of Dorothy Dix and her efforts to investigate the prisons. When prisons first formed, people weren’t exactly sure how they should go…
The date December 17, 1941 will live in our hearts forever because after that date many lives, laws, rules and thoughts were changed. But this essay will be focused on one person, Papa from the story, Farewell to Manzanar that is based on the true story of the Kawasaki family. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, President FDR put an executive order 9066 that required all Japanese to go to internment camps for the “protection” of the Japanese. The Kawasaki's family was no exception, papa…
Was the Vietnam War worth it? This was a question asked by many young men being drafted into the United States military to fight in the war through 1959-1975. After the men were drafted, they faced many struggles through basic training, but unfortunately, it was only the beginning of a long list of trials. One of the first trials the soldiers would experience was extreme change in climate and adapting to the rough terrain. Second, was navigating through the jungle, avoiding the tension traps and mines set to kill U.S. soldiers.…
Alcatraz was a home for the worst people that crime ever knew; that is why it is important to explore the history of Alcatraz, escaped inmates, and the daily routine for these horrendous people known to crime. Alcatraz is located in San Francisco, California on an island. The island where Alcatraz was once housed is equivalent to 1.25 miles long. The island was discovered by a famous Spanish naval officer named Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, who was the first European who entered the San Francisco Bay. How Alcatraz got its name was from a Spanish derivative from “Alcatraces”.…
Dehumanization in Night One of the world’s darkest periods, known as the Holocaust, was initiated and lead by Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a malicious man who over the course of his reign ultimately killed about six million Jews. Many of them were deported and distributed to concentration camps where German Nazis used numerous methods to torture innocent people. Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night documents the atrocities he experienced during World War II.…
A prison that was built by its own inmates was the Yuma Territorial Prison. I will be writing about the history of the Yuma Territorial Prison, I will be describing in detail what the prison looked like and what the prisoners did, the prison was built in Yuma, Arizona because Yuma is really hot and dry and there is nothing surrounding it, my limitations to further research are that i 've never seen the prison in person and i don 't know what the prisoners did on a daily bases except for what picture show. The prison was first opened on july 1, 1876 after it was authorized by Legislature in 1875. The prison was a very modern prison for its time it gave prisoners comforts that other prisoners did not have. There was a few escapes and a number…
Book Report: The Train To Crystal City By Jan Jarboe Russell The author Jan Russell through her book “The Train To Crystal City” explains how people were detained in crystal city camp and exchanged for allegedly important persons that were held by Germany and other US enemies during world war II. Russell wrote this book to inform people about the detention facility whose existence was known to very few people. Being a long-term journalist and a freelance writer Jan Russell has written several fictional and nonfictional books and articles. Writing the historical book wasn’t easy but her journalist skills came in handy and helped her unearth what transpired in the detention camps.…
Dehumanization Among Prisoners When considering the indescribable events that took place during World War II, often times people conclude that the guards of the concentration camps were the only ones who dealt out the inexplicable cruelty to the innocent Jewish prisoners of World War II. This statement later proves to be completely fictional. Elie Wiesel, writer of the memoir, Night describes the unthinkable injustice dealt to the prisoners by the German officers, but also the inconceivable: the dehumanization of prisoners by other prisoners. In his memoir, Wiesel goes beyond explaining the horrors of Hitler and the Nazi regime, but further explains how the prisoners and victims did nothing to rebel or perhaps even stay united as prisoners.…
Alcatraz Island has a rather distinct past. Even though Alcatraz sits in the middle of San Francisco Bay, the island seems distant, as if it were miles out of sea. The appeal to Alcatraz is uninviting, since it had played an important role in the history of California. Imagine being imprisoned in one of the world’s most disreputable prisons. However, not only is the island well known as the prison, but it was much more than a prison going back in time.…
