Penicillin is arguably the 21st century’s greatest invention ever. The miracle drug has saved millions of lives over the decades, that otherwise would have been ravaged by horrible diseases like pneumonia, syphilis, and gangrene. Penicillin also is thought to propel modern medicine into the lifesaver it is today.
Penicillin is a weird drug, it is considered an antibiotic which mean the main purpose for the drug is bacterial diseases. Penicillin is thought to be the first antibiotic ever founded. The discovery of penicillin was on accident though. The man who discovered the lifesaving drug was Alexander Fleming, a Scottish scientist who was researching bacteria at the time of the discovery. His complete lack of organization …show more content…
When Fleming found penicillin the future of bacterial diseases started to look less and less grim. The main use of penicillin is fight off bacterial diseases. The first time penicillin was used was during world war two, it was used to fight off infections that the allied forces got whether that was after surgery or just getting an infection while in the line of duty. It is estimated that penicillin saved over two million people during world war two. Penicillin was only used for world war two before 1950, then the company Pfizer started to produce for hospitals. But with bacteria becoming more and more resistant to penicillin it is almost becoming obsolete due to how strong the bacteria. For example the bacterial disease MRSA is caused by a bacteria resistance to any antibiotic. MRSA is incurable by any antibiotic. Another drawback for penicillin is that about ten percent of the world’s population is allergic to the antibiotic, but only about .03 percent of the world’s population is fatally allergic to penicillin, but penicillin is still useful for minor infections, at least for
